Consolidated PT-3, NY-1 and O-17

The Consolidated Model 2 was a training airplane used by the United States Army Air Corps, under the designation PT-3 and the United States Navy under the designation NY-1.

Development

Seeing the success of the Navy's NY-1 modification of a PT-1 airframe, the USAAC came to the conclusion that a radial engine was indeed ideal for a trainer. It was reliable and offered a good power-to-weight ratio. Therefore one PT-1 airframe was completed as XPT-2 with a 220 hp (164 kW) Wright J-5 Whirlwind radial engine.

The XPT-3 was almost identical to the XPT-2 except for the tail, revised wing panels and different shape. 130 production PT-3 aircraft were ordered in September 1927, with one being completed as the XO-17. These were followed by 120 PT-3A aircraft with minor changes. The XPT-3 became the XPT-5 when fitted with the Curtiss Challenger R-600 two-row six-cylinder radial engine, but was soon converted to PT-3 standard.

The PT-3 aircraft were superseded by the Boeing PT-13 Stearman starting in 1937, but a number were still operational with the Spartan Flying School in Tulsa Oklahoma into the middle of World War II.

Variants

  • XPT-2 : one PT-1 airframe with a 220 hp (160 kW) Wright J-5 (R-790) radial engine, wingspan 34 ft 7 in (10.5 m), length 28 ft 4 in (8.6 m), gross weight 2,427 lb (1,100 kg).
  • XPT-3 : one PT-1 airframe with revised wing panels (Clark "Y" wings) and a different vertical tail, wingspan 34 ft 6 in (10.5 m), length 28 ft 3 in (8.6 m), gross weight 2,439 lb (1,106 kg).
  • PT-3 : 130 ordered, one completed as the XO-17 prototype, gross weight 2,481 lb (1,125 kg).
  • PT-3A : 120 ordered with minor updates, Wright J-5, gross weight 2,432 lb (1,103 kg).
  • XPT-4 : unbuilt, was to be a development PT-3 with the experimental Fairchild-Caminez 447C engine.
  • XPT-5 : the airframe of the XPT-3 was temporarily fitted with the Curtiss Challenger R-600-1 two-row six-cylinder radial engine in 1929, later converted to PT-3 standard.

The NY-1

The NY-1 was essentially a PT-1 with provisions for the wheeled landing gear to be replaced by a single large float under the fuselage and two stabilising floats under the tips of the lower wing. A larger vertical tail was added to counter the effect of the floats. The NY-2 had a longer span wing fitted to overcome the high wing-loading issue of the seaplane version. Tested with complete success during October 1926, the Navy ordered 181 with the uprated R-790-8 Wright Whirlwind J-5 engine of 220 hp (160 kW). The NY-3 aircraft were similar to the NY-2 but had 240 hp (180 kW) Wright R-760-94 engines.

Operational history of the NY-1

The NY-1's first flight was November 1925, with deliveries starting May 1926. The NY-2's first flight was October 1926. The Navy had 108 in active use in 1929, with 35 more assigned to reserve squadrons. The NY-3 was delivered in 1929. The NY series was being phased out in the mid-1930s, with 15 in service in 1937, and one in service in 1939.

Variants of the NY-1

  • NY-1 : wingspan 34 ft 6 in (10.52 m), 200 hp (150 kW) Wright J-4 Whirlwind, 76 built.
  • NY-1A : a number of NY-1 aircraft modified for gunnery training with one .30 in (7.62 mm) trainable machine gun in the rear cockpit.
  • NY-1B : a number of retrofitted NY-1 aircraft with the long-span wings of the NY-2 and the 220 hp (160 kW) Wright J-5 Whirlwind.
  • NY-2 : wingspan increased to 40 ft (12.19 m), 220 hp J-5, 181 built.
  • NY-2A : NY-2 aircraft armed for gunnery training, 25 built.
  • NY-3 : similar to the NY-2 with a 240 hp (180 kW) Wright R-760-94 Whirlwind, 20 built.
  • XN3Y-1 : a single NY-2 tested with a Wright R-790-A Whirlwind.

O-17 Courier

A parallel development to the PT-3 series, the XO-17 was a converted PT-3 with such refinements as improved fuselage streamlining, oleo shock absorbers, wheel brakes, balanced elevators and increased fuel capacity.

It was used almost exclusively as a cross-country flying, gunnery, photographic and radio trainer. The O-17 had a removable fairing (carrying a Scarff ring mounting for one .30 cal (7.62 mm) trainable Browning machine gun.

The Royal Canadian Air Force purchased three generally similar aircraft, two Model 7 landplanes and one Model 8 floatplane, the latter with the same float gear as the NY series.

The sole XO-17A was converted from the PT-3 as a demonstrator that failed to secure any orders. It was later fitted with the experimental Packard DR-980 Diesel engine of 225 hp (168 kW).

The Model 15 was also an O-17 type airframe fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engine. It too failed to win any contracts.

  • O-17 Model 2 Courier : Production version for United States National Guard use, 29 built.
  • XO-17A (prototype) : One Consolidated PT-3 converted with a Wright R-790-3 engine intended for export.
  • Model 7 (RCAF landplane) : Royal Canadian Air Force, two built.
  • Model 8 (RCAF floatplane) : Royal Canadian Air Force, one built.
  • XPT-8 (demonstrator) : The airframe of the XO-17A prototype fitted with a Packard DR-980 Diesel engine of 225 hp (168 kw), scrapped in 1932.
  • XPT-8A : A single PT-3A (29-115) similarly converted with a Packard DR-980 Diesel engine with Project Number 'P-564', but returned to PT-3A configuration. The airframe was subsequently lost in a fatal midair with a P-12C of the 17th Pursuit Squadron 2 miles W of New Baltimore, Michigan on 17 December 1931.
  • Model 15 (demonstrator) : Conversion with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engine.

    Why this site?

    Discovery

    This website is dedicated to one's aeronautical passion (which I hope we share) and was realised mainly as an educationnal tool. Knowing that, you'll notice that each new visit brings random topics for the purpose of making new discoveries, some achievements or characters certainly not deserving the oblivion into which they have sometimes fallen.

    By these pages, we also want to pay tribute to all those who gave at one time or another, their lives or health in the name of freedom, aeronautical security or simply our comfort.

    Centralisation

    Internet is full of websites dedicated to aviation, but most are dedicated to subjects or periods that are very limited in space or time. The purpose of this site is to be as general as possible and thus treats all events as well as characters of all stripes and times while putting much emphasis on the most significant achievements.

    The same years saw birth of technologies like photography and cinema, thus permitting illustration of a large part of important aeronautical events from the start. Countless (and sometimes rare) media recently put online by enthousiasts finally give us access to these treasures, but the huge amount of information often makes things a little messy. A centralization effort is obviously most needed at this level.

    All persons who directly or indirectly contributed to the achievement or posting of such documents are here gratefully acknowledged.

    Bilingual website

    Website layout

    Left menus

    Because of the lack of space on smartphones and small tablets, these menus are hidden. Everything is nevertheless accessible via the main menu option, located between the video and photo sections. This menu is placed there for compatibility reasons with some browsers, which play the videos over the menus.

    "Search" and "Latest" :
    The link "In Titles" restricts the search to the titles of different forms. Use this option if you are looking for a plane, a constructor, a pilot or a particular event that could have been treated as a subject.

    The link "In Stories" will bring you to a search in all texts (the "Story" tab) and will take more time. The search term will appear highlighted in green when opening the corresponding story.

    Would you believe, "Timeline" will show all subjects in chronological order.

    "Random" will reload the entire page with a new random topic.

    The bottom section keeps you abreast of the latest five entries. New topics are added regularly. Don't hesitate to come visit us often : add bookmark.

    Blogs and Comments central section

    Under the photos section comes the comments tabs window :

    You can enter general comments in your own language via one of the two buttons on the left (BLOG EN and BLOG FR). Note that these buttons are accessible regardless of the language to allow some participation in the other language.

    All comments are subject to moderation and will be published only if they comply with the basic rules of decorum, while remaining relevant to the purpose of this site.

    The third tab allows you to enter comments on the shown topic and is bilingual. Personal anecdotes, supplements and other information questions will take place here.

    The "Story" tab shows the explanatory texts. They are most often taken from Wikipedia, a site where we participate regularly.

    The "Data" tab is reserved for list of features and specifications.

    Right menus

    On a smartphone, the lack of space is growing and this menu is moved to the bottom of the page to give priority to videos and pictures.

    The top right icons are links to videos posted by third parties (on their own responsabilities) or by ourselves. The link below these icons will take you to the channel of the one who posted the video.
